CHAPEL HILL -- Flora Creech Norris, age 85, passed away on March 11, 2009. At the time of her death, she was a resident at The Stratford Assisted Living facility in Chapel Hill.

 

Ms. Norris was the last surviving of five sisters, who were children of Herbert B. Norris and Minnie R. Norris. She was born in Raleigh on May 23, 1923.

 

She is survived by two nephews, Raymond W. Catlette, Jr. of San Francisco, California and Leonard E. Wheeler, Jr. of Eustis, Florida. She is also survived by her caring lifelong friend, Louise Wilkerson of Raleigh.

 

Ms. Norris was employed for many years in the broadcasting field, having worked at the national and local levels in various capacities. She worked at WPTF-AM, WWDC-AM and WRC/NBC in Washington, DC and for thirty years at WTVD-TV in the sales and news department. She retired in 1993.

 

She was a charter member of The Wake County Historical Society and she was a member of the Wake County Democratic Women and the Micajah Bullock Chapter of the NSDAR. She was a lifelong member of the Church of the Good Shepherd where she was a member of the Annie Cheshire Tucker Chapter of the Episcopal Church Women. Ms. Norris had served as a volunteer and fund raiser for a number of charitable organizations and the Democratic Party during her lifetime.

 

There will be a graveside service for Ms. Norris at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 13, 2009 in Historic Oakwood Cemetery, Reverend Dr. Robert C. Sawyer, officiating.
